Google Nest Mesh starts to run verrrryyyy slow. Power Cycle fixes it. Help?

I have a 6 node Google Wifi system, somewhat dated. Model is NLA 130425 running 14150.376.32. ISP is Ting, fiber based running close to 1G symmetric. Over the last couple of months 3-4 times a week, internet begins to run very slow, <500kbps.  Hard reset (power cycle) on the Google node that is connected to the TING router resolves the issue (the "master node"), and i'm back up at ~GE internet speed test (Ookla...nearest peering).  Master Node is connected to Ting router via CAT6 cable. Not a device WiFi issue as when I'm in the situation, all devices experience the slowdown, independent of which Google node they are connected to, or distance from Node, and the reset of the "master" Google node resolves the issue for all devices.  Any ideas on what could be causing the slowdown, and possible solutions? I appreciate your assistance. Thank you.

Hi jeffchang,

Thank you for reaching out to our community.

I understand that you have noticed during the last couple of months, three or four times a week, your Google Nest mesh starts to run very slow. I appreciate the troubleshooting efforts you have tried and for letting me know that your speed is less than 500 kbps, while you have close to 1 G available. Don't worry, help is here!

Before I start further troubleshooting, let me ask you a few questions:

  • How many devices actively use the internet at once?
  • Do you use a modem and router combo?
  • Is there a switch located on the network?
  • Have you tried to run a speed test while connected directly to the modem?

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Virna

@virnab : Thank you for your reply.

1) # of Devices: when I test, I have all of the dynamic devices off (ie: none of the kids streaming), but I have some fixed items still running (ie: smart home devices, but there's only a few, <10).

2. Modem only. ONU for Ting is Calix GP1100X GigaPoint.  ONU is connected directly to Google Wifi node via Cat6, then mesh to other Google Wifi nodes.

3. No switch

4. Speed test direct to ONU modem is 945Mbps down, 940 up.

Slow down happened again yesterday.  What was interesting is that my mobile device on WiFi slowed way down on one of the nodes, but then when I went downstairs and presumably starting working off another node, my speeds went signicantly up (3Mbps to 150 Mbps). Could I be experiencing a channel interference issue?

Thank you for the help and support!

Hi jeffchang,

Thanks for your timely response and the comprehensive information you've provided. I really appreciate it so I can better assist you.

Based on the information you shared with us, I recommend you perform the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check for WiFi, electromagnetic, and frequency interference. To learn more, you can check this Google Nest Help Center article: Troubleshoot wireless interference.
  2. Make sure your Google Nest WiFi points are 15 to 20 feet away from each other. Signals and traffic from other WiFi networks can cause congestion on nearby networks, especially if they share the same channel or have a strong signal. Too many Wi-Fi points in a small area or too close to each other create congestion, poor mesh, and slow speed.
  3. Change DNS and toggle Nest WiFi Cloud services to connect to a closer or more optimized DNS server, eliminate redundant DNS server checks, and ensure all settings are communicated and saved properly on Google Cloud servers. Please follow these instructions:
    1. Open the Google Home app.
    2. Tap WiFi, then select “Settings,” then choose “Advanced Networking.”
    3. Tap DNS.
    4. Select Custom, then enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
      • These DNS servers are the primary Google DNS servers that have been tested and confirmed to be quick and reliable nationwide.
      • If you have an IPv6 set, you need to specify a custom IPv6 DNS. If it's not currently enabled, you shouldn't be required to enter an IPv6 DNS.
        Google IPv6 DNS: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844
      • If you encounter inconveniences after using the DNS addresses above, set the DNS to the ISP's DNS instead. This only uses the ISP's DNS and doesn’t try to add Google's DNS as well.
    5. Tap Save.
  4. Enable Nest WiFi Cloud services:
    1. Open the Google Home app.
    2. Tap Wi-Fi, then select “Settings.”
    3. Tap “Privacy Settings.”
    4. Turn “Nest Wifi cloud services” on, then tap “Save.”
    5. Verify if the inconvenience is resolved, but if it persists, go to the next step.
  5. Perform a power cycle:
    1. Disconnect the modem from its power source.
    2. Unplug the Ethernet cable and power cord from the parent point.
    3. Remove the power cord from the child points.
    4. Leave everything unplugged for 2 minutes.
    5. Connect the power cable to the modem and allow it to fully turn on before proceeding. This process can take up to a minute.
    6. All light indicators should be solid colors.
    7. Connect the Ethernet cable, then the power cable, to the parent point. Wait until the modem is fully back online.
    8. Connect the power cable to the child points.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Virna
